Sat 8/12 @ 11AM-5PM, 6PM-midnight
It’s hard to believe it’s been 40 years since the Plain Dealer sent me out to the old North Randall Mall to review Wild Style, often pointed to as the film that helped popularize hip-hop culture across the entire country. It spotlighted all its elements: emcees, DJs, breakdancers and graffiti artists.
That film is one of two that will be showing continuously at the Akron Art Museum from 11am-5pm as it hosts the Rubber City 50-Year Hip-Hop celebration. (The other is 1984’s Beat Street.)
Then come back in the evening for a program headlined by noted DJ Cash Money, major DJ/producer in the Philadelphia hip-hop scene in the 80s. It will also feature the Respect Tha Architect Turntable Exhibition with DJ Nu Era, John Doe & Reemyk, and the Midwest Floor General 1 breakdance competition with a grand prize of $1,000. The show is being presented by Akron’s Keepers of the Art. Go here for tickets.
