Over more than three decades Brian Henke has made reputation for himself as this area’s most prominent master of fingerstyle guitar, a form of complex form of instrumental acoustic music that draws on genres such as jazz, folk, classical and country. In it, the guitarist plays the role of many instruments simultaneously.
Among other things, Henke promotes his annual benefit, the Woodchopper’s Ball, each December at the Kent Stage, bringing in other fingerstyle practitioners from around the region. One who’s made frequent appearances on the bill is Indianapolis-based Michael Kelsey, who draws on rock & roll and technology to create unique sounds.
Henke and Kelsey are two of the three fingerstyle guitarist who will be playing a concert called Wizards of Acoustic Guitar at the Unity Spiritual Center in 23855 Detroit Road in Westlake. The third is Shohei Toyada, raised in the Columbus area and based now in Kyoto, Japan. A graduate of Boston’s Berklee School of Music, he was the 2012 winner of the Japanese National Fingerstyle Championship.
The concert is a benefit for the center. There’ll be refreshments and a raffle as well.
