Amber Ford is one of the most gifted young photography-based artists in northeast Ohio. She graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 2016 and since then, has been constantly surprising us with ways she’s used her photography as the basis for art-making with other mediums such as collage and print, as well as using “traditional” photography to tell stories about the lives of people around her. The latter has fueled forays into photojournalism, something else she’s proven to be very good at.
Ford has been part of many shows around town, as well as had shows of her own. Her next takes place at the FIG Community Gallery in the Pivot Center for Art, Dance and Expression. It’s a two-part show called On the Surface, Deep Down, All Around. In it, we’re told, “Ford aims to provide softer access points to the difficult realities that many families face daily.”
One part features portraits of families inspired by the play Watching Butterflies, while the other featuring still lifes that obliquely refer to the health disparities facing poor communities of color.
It opens with a reception on Friday July 21 @ 5-8pm and will be on view through Friday August 11.
