MoCa Cleveland Debuts Four Shows for the Second Half of the Year

Nina Abney “Cafeteria 2”

Fri 7/7 @ 7PM

Why is MoCa Cleveland closed right now? It’s busy inside as it prepares for the next set of exhibits for the second half of its year.

Four exhibits, three of them group shows, will bring a variety of media to bear on a vast range of styles and viewpoints.

A Soft Place to Land includes the work of nine international textile artists — hence the title — at different career stages who do fiber-based work to reflect on their personal stories and identities and how their medium connects the personal to wider cultural and societal ideas.

¡Juntos! (Together)’s seven Cleveland Latino artists who didn’t previously know each other were linked by a residency in which they were mentored by two veteran Latino artists to blend their distinctive visions and styles into collective works.

For Don’t Mind If I Do, organizer Finnegan Shannon, a “creator of loopholes,” brought together seven artists for what’s described as “an experiment in more deeply collaborative exhibition-making, demonstrating how even temporary changes in power structures create pathways of access for visitors, artists, and staff.” It revolves around a conveyor belt that delivers the artwork to the audience, which is encouraged to sit on furniture and engage directly with objects that come to them.

Finally, Nina Chanel Abney’s site-specific mural Cafeteria 2, was part of her solo show, Big Butch Synergy, at moCa earlier this year. It includes elements of that show as well as her Fishing Was His Life collages inspired by a series of Gordon Parks photos of the fishing industry.

The shows open with an evening event on Friday July 7. It’s free. The shows run through the end of the year.
