Join Discussion of 1962 Animated Musical Movie With Judy Garland as a Cat

Thu 8/3 @ 7PM

The 1962 animated musical Warner Brothers Gay Purr-ee was different from the usual Disney-fied type of movie musical you typically saw back then. For one thing, it was pretty much adult fare. And it starred some noted voices in a tale of a French country cat named Mewsette in the 1890s who goes to Paris looking for adventure and excitement and finding sinister cats with bad intentions. Of course, there’s a hero who comes to her rescue.

Mewsette’s voice is provided by Judy Garland, while noted Broadway star Robert Goulet sings the role of her rescuer. Other well-know actors voicing characters include Hermione Gingold, Red Buttons, Morey Amsterdam and noted Warner Brothers voice actor Mel Blanc (Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, Tweety, Sylvester and many many more). And the music — songs such as “Roses Red, Violets Blue,” “Paris Is a Lonely Town” and “Little Drops of Rain” —  was provided by the team of Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg, who wrote the music for the film The Wizard of Oz, including Garland’s signature song “Over the Rainbow.”

You can join The Musical Theater Project’s artistic director Bill Rudman to hash over the film in its next edition of Movie at Home. Here’s the drill: first watch Rudman’s YouTube video telling you what to look for when you screen the film. Then for watch it, also on YouTube. Finally, join Bill and other film buffs on Zoom on Thursday August 3 to discuss the movie. It’s free and fun!
