Greater Cleveland Aquarium Celebrates a Summer of Sharks

Sat 7/1-Sun 8/6

Sharks have been fascinating people for years, even before the 1975 move Jaws scared people senseless about whether it’s safe to go in the water. In fact, you’ve got a MUCH better chance of being hit by a car on your street than being attacked by a shark. But the myth of these ferocious ocean predators has an iron grasp on our imaginations. They even gave us the odious term “loan sharks.”

Naturally, that’s an obession that’s ideal for an aquarium to exploit and that’s what the Greater Cleveland Aquarium is doing with its summer Fin Fest which runs from Saturday July 1 through Sunday August 6 @ 10am-5pm

“Sharks are disappearing at alarming rates, helping to build a broader appreciation for their diversity, importance and plight is important,” the aquarium’s general manager Stephanie White points out. It seems like humans are the real problem: The International Shark Attack File says only five people died as a result of shark attacks in 202, while humans kill about 100 million sharks each year.

During Fin Fest, visitors will get a four-page shark activity book, and can take in shark discovery cart interactive programming, appearances by shark mascot Finn, scuba diver shark talks, shark feedings and stingray feeds each day, along with crafts and other activities from various community organization partners on a rotating basis. Of course the centerpiece is the aquarium’s 230,000-gallon shark habitat and 175-foot seatube where visitors can get a close-up looks at the sharks. All activities are include with regular admission.

And any visitor who comes dressed in some sort of shark-themed gear will be entered to win a $125 gift shop gift certificate.
