Dancing Wheels Announces June Gala Spotlighting Black Women Jazz Singers

Fri 6/16 @ 8PM

The Dancing Wheels Company & School has announced another gala event taking place this summer at Playhouse Square’s Allen Theatre Friday June 16.

The multi-disciplinary event, combining dance and live music, will focus on women of color from the 20s-50s who influenced musical performers to the present day. Choreographers Catherine Meredith, Staycee Pearl, and Laura Ann Smyth will tell their stories through movement, while the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra and vocalist Anqwenique Kinsel will enhance their contributions with a new version of a song associated with vocalist Abbey Lincoln. The School of Dancing Wheels Performance Ensemble will also make an appearance.

Meredith’s contribution “Five by Nina” will be set to a group of songs by Nina Simone that uses a suite of songs by Nina Simone. Pearl is choreographing to an Abbey Lincoln piece while Smyth will premiere a piece featuring music by Ella Fitzgerald.  Former School of Dancing Wheels student and novice choreographer Alex Martinez and Sara Lawrence-Sucato, Dancing Wheels’ Director of Education, have created the school ensemble’s piece danced to a tune by Billie Holiday.

VIP tickets are $150; general admission tickets are $50. All include a champagne and dessert reception following the performance. Go here for VIP tickets; order general admission tickets here.
