Cleveland has become a veritable public art gallery in recent years, with murals popping up on walls all over the city. One recent summer —2021 — saw two mural marathon, one by L.A.-based Cleveland native artist WRDSMTH who left his signature typewriter logo in dozens of locations and the Cleveland Walls festival, which sponsored teams of both local and national artists to adorn walls. The results of both of these events can still be seen around town.
Now the tourism bureau Destination Cleveland and Graffiti HeArt, the nonprofit that supports street-style artists (and sponsored WRDSMTH’s work here) are pairing up to solicit proposals for up to six new murals for the city of Cleveland.
“Proposals should embody the principles of what makes Cleveland Cleveland, including the values of connection, creativity, and determination and a fun and unpretentious attitude,” they say. “Proposals should also express the city’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.” Artists will also have to make a Destination Cleveland “brand phrase” the centerpiece of their work and include the Cleveland Script logo seen in those selfie-inducing installations at several places around town.
Each artist/team will get $14,000 and will be expected to buy their materials. Installation will take place June-October of this year.
