Maltz Museum Show Looks at the Legacy of Artist/Inventor/Humorist Rube Goldberg

Wed 5/24 @ 7-8:30PM

The name Rube Goldberg has become synonymous with oddball contraptions, suggesting a machine that does things that are complex and off-the-wall for no real reason. But the truth is far different: there was a real Rube Goldberg, and he was an inventor and an innovator, as well as a cartoonist, author and engineer.  The Merriam-Webster Dictionary once defined “Rube Goldberg” as “accomplishing by complex means what seemingly could be done simply.”

Much of that reputation came from his work as a cartoonist: it made people laugh. In his day (1908-1963), he was one of the most popular, widely read and highly paid cartoonists in the U.S.

Now the Maltz Museum in Beachland is hosting an touring exhibit titled Rube Goldberg™: The World of Hilarious Invention! created by the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh. The exhibit features both his illustrations and cartoons, and an array of actual machines inspired by them, which visitors can activate to see for themselves the myriad ways they make simple tasks inefficient and complicated. It includes an art studio to create your own cartoons and a wearable “self-operating” napkin perfect for selfies.

The show opens this Wednesday, May 24, with a special family-oriented event. Visitors will be able to see the show, as well as the museum’s permanent exhibits and then participate in a Community Jam Session, where they’ll create musical machines in the spirit of Rube Goldberg, or bring their own (or their voices) to take part. No musical ability or experience is needed — all are welcome.
