Cleveland-based jazz & pop pianist Joey Skoch has performed with a host of musician both here and in Chicago (where he got his masters degree at DePaul University), including note jazz vocalist Dee Alexander and the Chicago Jazz Orchestra in the latter, and Bobby Selvaggio, Ernie Krivda and Jack Schantz here in northeast Ohio.
This week he’ll be at the BOP STOP with his own trio, which includes bassist Ahmed McLemore and drummer Aaron Yanda. In addition, he’ll have a special guest: teenage jazz/pop/blues vocalist Ava Preston, already a seasoned pro at 18. She won Downbeat’s title as best junior high jazz vocalist in 2018 and 2019, and just was cited as the 2023 best high school jazz soloist by the magazine. She cites inspirations such as Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Nina Simone and Ella Fitzgerald, Alanis Morrissette, Nora Jones, Esperanza Spaulding and Diana Krall.
