On May 19, 1910, when Euclid Beach Park opened for the season, visitors got their first look at its Grand Carousel. The spectacular merry-go-round featured four rows of hand-carved wooden horses three inside rows of “jumpers” that went up and down as the carousel revolved, and an outside row of stationary horses that were nearly life-sized.
The park closed after its 1969 season, and all that’s left is an entrance arch marking the site near East 156th and Lakeshore Boulevard in North Collinwood. Eventually (after a detour to Maine), the carousel returned to northeast Ohio, restored, and since 2014, has been installed in its own round, windowed room in a corner of the Western Reserve Historical Society.
Come to WRHS today to celebrate the birthday of the Grand Carousel and ride your favorite wooden horse. Rides are free all day with regular admission.
