Flutist/composer Allison Loggins-Hull is serving a three-year residency as the 11th composer fellow with the Cleveland Orchestra, and has just completed its first year. She and her work will be showcased as part of the orchestra’s Mandel Opera & Humanities Festival: An American Dream, which runs from May 11-20. But they’re getting a head start this week when they perform the world premiere of her piece Can You See? as part of its concerts on May 4 and May 6.
Loggins-Hull has established a reputation across classical and popular music, working with a variety of acts including Flutronix (which she co-founded to explore new ways of presenting music for the flute), Imani Winds, the Bang on a Can All-Stars, Alarm Will Sound and Lizzo. She’s performed at major concert facilities around the world including Lincoln Center’s Mostly Mozart Festival, Carnegie Hall and Chicago’s Symphony Hall Center. Her bio says, “Her music is resonant with social and political themes of the current moment, encompassing motherhood, Blackness, and cultural identity.”
In addition, Loggins-Hull has curated a pre-concert program called “Honoring Black Composers Prelude Concert,” featuring Cleveland Orchestra musicians.
The evening will also feature a performance by a Cleveland musician who has gone on to a thriving international career: cellist Alisa Weilerstein. She’ll be the soloist in Samuel Barber’s Cello Concerto. The program concludes with Sergei Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 4. Go here for tickets.
