CityMusic Cleveland’s next concert stars one of the less celebrated members of the orchestra: the clarinet, known more for its role in jazz and klezmer.
Among the pieces included in the program, dubbed “Clarinet Dialogues,” are two by Felix Mendelssohn, Concert Piece No. 1, Op. 113 and Concert Piece No. 2, Op. 114, both for clarinet basset horn, and piano. They’ll be performed by the husband-and-wife duo of clarinetist Daniel Gilbert and pianist Donna Lee.
They’ll continue with Francis Poulenc’s Sonata for Two Clarinets and Bohuslav Martinu’s Serenade for Two Clarinets and Strings. “Both pieces highlight the virtuosity and expressiveness of the clarinet, making for a truly enchanting musical experience, they say. In addition to Gilbert and Lee, the concert will feature Ellen Breakfield on clarinet,Kiarra Saito Beckman on violin, Colin Henley on viola and Anna Bowman on cello.
They’ll perform at Praxis Fiber Workshop, the weaving studio in the Waterloo Arts District. As with all CityMusic concerts, it’s free and open to all.
