Sun 5/14 @ 4PM

Apollo’s Fire’s touring program “A Night at Bach’s Coffeehouse,” offering a free-wheeling look at music that was in the air during J.S. Bach’s lifetime, has proven so popular that the ensemble has created a new program.

It’s a sequel of sorts, dubbed “A Return to Bach’s Coffeehouse.” Inspired by Leipzig’s 18th-century Zimmerman’s Coffeehouse, where both Bach and George Philipp Telemann led orchestra concerts, it features music by both composers, as well as another contemporary, Antonio Vivaldi.

Bach will be represented by Brandenburg Concerto No. 6 and his Concerto for Oboe & Violin while Israeli Recorder player will take the lead on Vivaldi’s concerto La Notte (“Night”). Mor and flutist Kathie Stewart will partner in the starring roles of Telemann’s Concerto for Flute & Recorder. Apollo’s Fire’s concertmaster/assistant artistic director Alan Choo will be leading the program.

The ensemble performers the program at Akron’s First United Methodist Church on Thursday; at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Cleveland Heights on Friday and Saturday; and at Rocky River Presbyterian Church on Sunday. Pre-concert talks will take lace an hour prior to each concert, and Thursday’s concert will be followed by an Afterglow reception with German chocolate cake, sparkling cider and the chance to mingle with the musicians.
