Sat 4/22 @ noon
Record Store Day, which started in 2008, has become an increasingly hit-or-miss affair. It was originally founded to get people into independent record stores, with exclusive merchandise, such as colored vinyl or records with unreleased live tracks, available only to participating shops, released to lure customers in. But many have opted out as the process of getting that merchandise has become increasingly competitive and slanted toward retailers with more clout.
Some shops just celebrate in their own way. The Beachland and its shop, This Way Out, which stocks not only vinyl records, but magazines, vintage clothing, memorabilia and Beachland merchandise, will be having sales on its own merch, starting at 1pm while upstairs local singer/songwriter Brent Kirby will perform at 1pm and DJ Odd Todd will spin vinyl all day. There’ll be food and drink specials too.
You can also walk up the block and visit Blue Arrow Records, with its huge every-day selection of vinyl and other music-related items, along with live cats to pet. They’re open Saturday from noon-4pm.
Check out the list of participating stores in the area here; call first because some will be taking part in their own way and some may not be doing it at all this year.
