A consummate professional, known for his rigor, his calm, even demeanor, and his low-key enthusiasm for any topic he covered, the looming presence of broadcaster and journalist Rick Jackson is saying goodbye as he announces his retirement from ideastream in June. But it may be his humility, his insistence on giving all sides a fair listen, that will be his legacy.
Now in his 20th year at ideastream, Jackson is a veteran newscaster who has worked locally at Channel 19 WOIO and Channel 3 WKYC-TV, but has held stints throughout the US in Wheeling, Memphis, Charlotte, NC, New York and Philadelphia.
Northeast Ohioans have heard Jackson’s voice become ubiquitous over the past 20 years on WCPN radio as host of Morning Edition, on WVIZ-TV as host of Ideas, as the host of The Sound of Ideas Reporters Roundtable on WCPN and the host of NewsDepth on WVIZ. He’s hosted debates, City Club of Cleveland forums and discussions on a wide array of topics.
He’s been on the air in all 50 states and in 40 countries interviewing everyone from US presidents to everyday people making a change in our world. He’s won awards ranging from Emmy Awards to Society of Professional Journalists to the Associated Press.
In our region, Jackson has been the perfect host and moderator, a trusted , informed and unbiased voice through the turbulence of the past decades. His voice will be missed.
