Quire Cleveland Performs 17 Music Versions of “Our Father” in Six Languages

Fri 4/21 @ 7:30PM

Sat 4/22 @ 8PM

Sun 4/23 @ 4PM

The Our Father prayer is one of the most familiar to Christians in every time period and culture. It’s unsurprising that composers across the centuries have gravitated to it to set into music. We sang a version in my high school girls’ chorus even though about 35 of the 40 or so girls singing were Jewish.

The professional singers of Quire Cleveland will be tackling many of these settings, in six languages covering four centuries, in its next program Pater Noster. They range from an 11th-century Gregorian chant to a 14th-century version by Italian composer Giovanni Pierluigi de Palestrina to 16th-century British version by Robert Stone to an 18th-century American version by Williams Billings to a 19th-century version by famed Italian operatic composer Giuseppe Verdi: 17 versions in all.

They’ll perform the program three times: on Friday April 21 at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in downtown Cleveland; on Saturday April 22 at St. Anselm Church in Chesterland; and on Sunday April 23 at St. Christopher Church in Rocky River.

All performances are open seating with no tickets or reservations required. It’s free by a freewill offering will be taken, with a suggested donation of $30.
