There’s been a lot of handwringing over artist studio and work/live spaces since word came out two years ago that the Artcraft Building, long a haven for artists and creative businesses in the Superior Arts District, was being converted — first, it was said, for luxury apartments, and now tagged to be the new central police headquarters. By the time that was announced many artists had moved their studios to the nearby Twist Drill Building or to places such as the Lakewood artist colony in the Lake Erie Building aka Screw Factory.
With artist/entrepreneur buildings such as 78th Street Studios and the Hildebrandt Building at capacity, there’s clearly a demand for such space. Meanwhile, live/work spaces, such as those at the Tower Press Building up the street from Artcraft, are at a premium.
Revision: Creative Spaces, a forum sponsored by Assembly for the Arts, will take a look at how what the situation looks like for artist and creative spaces, as well as event spaces, in Cleveland, what exists and what the need is. It takes place at SPACES gallery. It’s free; you can register here.
