When No Exit New Music returns for its next series of concerts, it will, as usual, be bringing along a bunch of world premieres, since introducing new music is embedded in its mission.
In fact, the concerts will feature four brand-new pieces. They include Except for the silence in your touch by Victoria Cheah, Connie Converse songs arranged by Jeremy Siskind, Sonnets by Robert Honstein and Time Machine Hyperboles by Cleveland-based Chris Neiner. They’ll conclude the program with Zihan Wu’s 2018 Portraits of Solar Terms I, II, III.
They’ll also feature two guest musicians, pianist Shuai Wang and vocalist Lauren Pearl — marking only the second time the group has worked with a singer.
“I know our audiences will be thrilled by this eclectic program,” says the group’s artistic direct Timothy Beyer. “The new work by Victoria Cheah possesses a stillness and has a quiet intensity to it, whereas Chris Neiner’s work has a not-so-still or quiet intensity; it’s raucous, in all the right ways. Zihan Wu’s three Solar Terms pieces are intricate and beautiful, while Robert Honstein’s new work, Sonnets, written for voice and ensemble, takes its libretto from Edna St. Vincent Millay and are rather gorgeous little songs.” In a different vein, Jeremy Siskind has arranged some wonderful Connie Converse songs for voice and piano. Connie was a singer-songwriter in the 1950s-70s, absolutely singular for her time. She disappeared mysteriously and in more recent years her folk music has developed a cult following.”
They’ll perform at SPACES on Friday April 7, at Heights Arts on Friday April 14 and at Kent State University’s Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday April 15. All No Exit concerts are free and open to all. Go here for more information.
