Founded in 2016, the Cleveland Cultural Gardens now comprises nearly three dozen gardens strung out along MLK Boulevard and East Boulevard in Rockefeller Park . They’re sponsored, designed and maintained by the various ethnicities that have created the rich fabric of cultures in northeast Ohio. Early on, they were primarily from such Eastern and Southern European counties as Poland, Italy, Germany, Hungary and Ukraine (interestingly, the latter was the only one is full blossom when we drove through last weekend). More recently, they’ve diversified to groups such as Vietnamese, Ethiopian, Syrian and Pakistani. And just a few years ago, the Peace Plaza was dedicated, a central space for events and performances of all types.
Last year, Cleveland historian John J. Grabowski and architectural photographer Lauren R. Pacini combined their talents to publish Cleveland Cultural Gardens: A Landscape of Diversity, which takes readers through the history and design of the gardens. With full blossom season coming on soon, use the book as a guide to take a walk through them.
The author and photographer will be giving a talk at the Coventry branch of the Cleveland Heights-University Heights Public Library in collaboration with Mac’s Backs bookstore on Coventry.
The event is free and open to all. You don’t need to register.
