It’s salamander season! Their appearance in our wetlands is one of the first signs of the oncoming spring.
Get out into nature and learn how these amphibians fit into our ecosystem when Roberta Muehlheim, Dr. Timothy Matson, Garrett Ormiston and Ken Schneider from the Cleveland Museum of Natural History lead a group through Erie County’s Wolf Run Preserve to look for salamanders and other signs of spring.
“This preserve features ice-scour micro-prairies and shale cliffs that tower over the Vermilion River,” and they’ll tell you all about it as you join them on his moderately paced hike.
“As the evening light fades, Assistant Curator of Vertebrate Zoology Roberta Muehlheim, an expert on ambystomid salamanders, and Curator Emeritus Dr. Timothy Matson will lead us on a search for small-mouthed and spotted salamanders — both ambystomid species — in the preserve’s seasonal wetlands,” they promise. “If temperatures allow, noisy spring peepers and chorus frogs may be on the lookout for mates.”
Make your reservation here; once you’re signed up you’ll get the exact meet-up location. Be sure to dress warm and wear sturdy waterproof shoes!
