CMNH Leads a Walk to Look for Birds in the Mentor Marsh

Sun 3/26 @ 8AM

The Aububon Society declares certain areas to be “Important Bird Areas” (IBAs) that it’s identified as being an essential habitat for the conservation of native birds.

One such area is the Grand River Lower Watershed. “The lower Grand River includes gorge areas with hemlock ravines in tributaries, a harbor, state park, county parks, hemlock ravines, riparian corridor, beach grasses/dunes, lakeshore, restored wetland, and deciduous forests,” they say.  The IBA includes Mentor Marsh, a nature preserve that’s part of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.

This week you can join CMNH naturalists for an “Important Area Bird Walk” at the western end of the marsh, exploring areas not generally open to the public. They’ll be sharing information about bird behavior and bird calls, while you try to catch a glimpse of the birds themselves — bring binoculars! And be sure to dress warmly and wear sturdy shoes of boots. The walk itself is moderate and family-friendly.

Go here to register; once you register, you’ll be sent the meeting place.
