The death of guitarist Jeff Beck in January came as a shock to those whose rock & roll roots are in ’60s British blues rock, the first of the Yardbirds’ three legendary guitar players to pass away (the others are Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton). Beck, born in 1944, had already become an in-demand guitarist by the early ’60s before the Yardbirds brought him to prominence. His profile continued to increase with the Jeff Beck Group, featuring Rod Stewart as vocalist. But by the late 70s, his focus was more on instrumental music that incorporated jazz and sonic experimentation. And despite a reputation for having a difficult personality, he was constantly collaborating with a mix of veteran and youthful musicians.
A group of Cleveland musicians will be gathering at the Music Box Supper Club to be tribute to this distinctive, diverse musician, led by blues/rock/funk singer Sam Hooper. His guests include keyboard player Moss Stanley, Gregory Henderson, drummer Jim Wall, bassist/vocalist Guy Snowdon, Nitebridge singer Denise Rainey Pace, blues guitarist Gaetano Letizia, violinist/violist Michele George, guitarist Jon Pyle and guitarist Butch Armstrong of the Armstrong-Bearcat Band.
They’ll perform music from all phases of Beck’s career going back to the Yardbirds in the mid 60s, through his recent work with younger artists such as Joss Stone.
