When I opened my daily Climate Nexus newsletter this morning and saw that Fox “News” commentator Tucker Carlson had referred to Harvard Professor of the History of Science and author of many scholarly and mainstream media articles on climate science Naomi Oreskes as “some chick,” I knew I had to let Clevelanders know she would be speaking here.
While I’ve been unable to locate Carlson’s credentials for vetting climate scientists, Orestes has just debuted a new book titled The Big Myth: How American Business Taught Us to Loathe Government and Love the Free Market, which undoubtedly hits all his sweet spots for outrage. Co-written with Erik Conway, the book looks at how a coordinated and well-funded propaganda campaign over the last century has convinced Americans to distrust the government (i.e. us) and put all their faith in “the free market,” which of course isn’t free: the more money you have the more you benefit. The authors look at how the wealthy and powerful have pushed back against things such as unions and child labor laws and created an ideology that’s led to climate attacks, giant tech monopolies, the opioid crisis and the lethal response to COVID-19.
She’ll speak at the Beachwood branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library. It’s free but you must register here. Books will be available for purchase onsite courtesy of Mac’s Backs — Books on Coventry.
