For some reason, TV weather forecasters are among local television’s best known names and biggest stars, perhaps because weather is news we all follow, even if we’re not interested in the rest of it. Dick Goddard, Mark Koontz and Al Roker all built their fame on being “the weather guy” aka “meterologist” to make them sound like real scientists.
Northeast Ohio native Betsy Cling is the “chief meteorologist” at WKYC, a job she’s held since 2008. And while her job hinges more on personality and journalistic skills than a strong science background, she’s laudable used her platform to promote a program at WKYC called “Growing Curiosity: Girls in STEM” to encourage women to enter the fields of science, technology, engineered and math.
She’ll talk about her job and what it entails as part of the Cleveland Stories series at the Music Box Supper Club. It’s free; doors open for dinner at 5pm and the program starts at 7. Make a reservation here.
