Cleveland chamber ensemble Les Delices conceived of its online Salonera series during the pandemic, but the twice-monthly programs proved so popular that they’re ongoing. Each has a particular theme and combines recorded and live performances with commentary and background from performers and musicologists.
Next up is “Finding Lisette,” which takes its name from a Haitian Creole song “Lisette quitté la plaine.” That song has been central to baritone/scholar Jean-Bernard Cerin’s practice. In this episode he’ll explain why as he shares the song’s history and how its words and meanings have changed as different global music communities adopt it and tailor it to their own uses. And he’ll share how it reflects Haiti’s turbulent history, making it the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere despite its cultural riches.
