The triennial Lottery League throws together musicians who’ve never played together to form temporary groups who perform ten-minute sets at “The Big Show.” A few groups always outlast the event, but it’s unlikely anyone would have predicted one of those groups would last for nearly a decade. But Hiram-Maxim, which formed for the 2013 Lottery League, has done so, with only one member change among its four original members.
Singer Fred Gunn, guitarist Dave Taha and drummer/pragrammer John Panza have gone the distance, with original keyboard player Lisa Miralia replaced by multi-instrumentalist Balmer. And they’re about to release a new album, Colder, their first with Balmer, and a follow-up to 2017’s Ghosts. It was recorded and mixed in Brooklyn by Martin Bisi of Sonic Youth/Swans/Unsane fame. They’ve already shared a track called “Alpha,” which showcases the band’s dense, abrasive, inexorable industrial-based sound. Listen here.
The band will be doing a release show this weekend at No Class, with Orphan and GRVE opening. But heads up: it’s official release on Aqualamb Records in April 7. The show at No Class will be your only opportunity to snag a CD, cassette or vinyl album before then.
Doors are at 8, show is at 9pm. Cover is $10.
