Get ready to celebrate Kurentovanje with a whirl of special activities that in recent years have stretched this distinctive Slovenian celebration meant to hasten the departure of winter to more than a week, culminating with the free festival at the National Slovenian Home on St. Clair February 18.
One of those events is called “Pizza, Pop, Pivo & Polka.” It’s centered around something as distinctively Cleveland as it is Slovenian: the traditional “Cleveland-style” aka Slovenian polka, which is honored at the Cleveland-style Polka Hall of Fame in Euclid.
Cleveland Slovenian traditional dance ensemble Folklorna Skupina Kres will teach attendees the steps of both the polka and its counterpart, the waltz, which is interjected to give dancers a chance to rest from the high-energy polka and perhaps nuzzle their partner. After the lesson, a live band will play, and everyone can hit the dance floor: bring a partner or meet some new people. Part of the fun is switching partners!
And as you can tell by the event’s title, there’ll be food and drink as well. (Pivo, for those not in the know, is Slovenian beer.) It takes place at the National Slovenian Home, which has a large dance floor! Get your tickets here.
