Artist Dale Goode Talks About His Monoprints & Sculptures at HEDGE Gallery

Thu 2/23 @ 5:30-7:30PM

The art world — like the world in many fields — always seems to be looking for the next hot young thing, the “30 under 30” or “25 under 25.” Fresh faces just out of art school are touted on websites, in magazine pages and even in galleries, often ones unready for such attention. Luckily, we still see recognition given to previously under-recognized artists with a lifetime of accomplishment, such as 74-year-old Cleveland painter/sculptor/mixed-media artist Dale Goode, who has been making art for decades, with a low simmer of recognition, bringing his lived experience in Cleveland’s Glenville and Hough neighborhoods (where he finds many of his materials) to bear on his work.

His show Raw Vision has been on view at 78th Street Studios’ HEDGE Gallery, since January, including paintings, prints and sculpture, with a focus on his monoprinting techniques. As the gallery describes these works, “He uses found objects, utilitarian and decorative materials, inks up their surfaces and repetitively prints them in thick layers of primary colors. Stacked patterns and textures create embossed prints that seem to breathe new life into the discarded objects.” The show also includes his found-object sculptures, reconfigured for this show, and an oversized painting in varnish, shellac and latex.

It will be on view through Friday March 3 but if you’d like to meet Goode and hear from him about his artwork and what inspires it, he’ll be doing a talk at the gallery Thursday February 23. It’s free and all are welcome.
