Akron Art Museum Brightens the Gloom with “Midwinter Tunes” Event

Sat 2/18 @ 6-10PM

With the holidays long gone and spring only a distant blip on the horizon, the Akron Art Museum is brightening up the dreariest time of year with an evening it calls “Midwinter Tunes.”

This free event will fill the entire museum with a mix of art activities and music performances, with live music and film in the museum lobby, artists in the galleries, pop-ups from community organizations, and food and drink vendors.

Joanna Keane Lopez (pictured), who’s part of the museum’s current show State of the Art: Constructs, will be in the gallery with associates Monique Carr and Guadalupe Maravilla, doing a pair of performances around her installation at 6:30 and 8pm.

Local musicians performing in the lobby include Church of Starry Wisdom, Language, Rubber Band, Suitor, Marcus Alan Ward and Peachcurls, while DJ Palaces will provide what’s described as “contemporary art and sound blended within spins and beats.” And three poets from the Wick Community Center — Sergio Roper, Charlie Malone and Michael Buebe — will be offering their words.

In addition, Akron-based Earthquaker Devices will have an interactive “pedal petting zoo” featuring their guitar sound processing pedals, and the Nightlight Cinema, located just across the street from the museum, will be screening black and white films in the lobby. There’ll also be pop-up shops from Elizabeth’s Bookshop & Writing Center, Daisy Pops cake pops, 7th Floor Clothing and Garage Kids Vegan.

Although it’s free, RSVPs are preferred. Go here to register.
