Twenty-six-year-old Spanish rising classical piano star Martín García García has a special connection to Cleveland and a reason to tip his hat to northeast Ohio for helping to fuel his career: he was the 2021 winner of the prestigious Cleveland International Piano Competition. He went on to win third prize and concerto competition at the equally important at International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw. Both serve as launch pads for international careers and indeed 2022 was that year for him: he released his first album and played more than 70 concerts globally. (Weirdly, his bio, enumerating his upcoming concerts, says “There will be many new apparitions in Spain.”)
Northeast Ohio will have such an “apparition” this coming week when he performs for the Tuesday Musical Association’s Margaret Baxtresser Annual Piano Concert at E.J. Thomas Hall as part of its 135th season. There he’ll play Robert Schumann’s Symphonic Etudes Op. 13 and Johannes Brahms’ Sonata No. 3 in F minor Op. 5.
