New York-based musician/producer/composer Ryan Lott has been co-nominated for Oscars in two categories: in the Best Original Score category with his band Son Lux, who scored the film Everything Everywhere All At Once (which snagged the most nominations of any film), and in the Best Song Category for “This Is a Life” from that film, which he co-wrote with Talking Heads’ David Byrne and Japanese-American singer-songwriter Mitski.
Lott has scored several other films and worked with many new music ensembles, such as eighth blackbird who Grammy-winning 2015 album Filament he contributed to as Son Lux, original a solo project but now at trio that also includes Rafiq Bhatia and Ian Chang.
He’s also worked with many dance ensembles, including Gina Gibney and Stephen Petronio, as well as Cleveland’s GroundWorks DanceTheater and Inlet Dance Theatre. Those relationships date from 2003-2007 when he lived in Cleveland. During that time, he won the Cleveland Arts Prize for the Emerging Artist Award in 2006, and an Ohio Arts Council fellowship. In Cleveland he produced a large-scale multi-media project CONNECT, and sold CDs of the project to benefit food shelters and programs such as Cleveland’s City Mission and relief for Hurricane Katrina. He also performed as one half of the funk/hip-hop duo 2% Milk. He moved to New York City in 2007.
