Whales, which can really almost 100 feet and hundreds of thousands of pounds, are the largest animals on the planet and fascinate us with their sheer size, just as they fascinated novelist Herman Melville in the mid 19th century when he wrote his novel Moby-Dick, with its symbolic sea monster. In fact, whales are generally benign, living peacefully in the oceans unless disturbed — although they are impacted by climate change and ocean pollution.
National Geography photographer Brian Skerry has specialized in ocean exploration and photography for the past four decades so he knows a lot about whales and has devoted his attest project to documenting them. He’s learned many new things about how they live, how they communicate and how they interact with each other, and what that means for humans and the planet. He’s currently on tour sharing his insights in a program called “Secrets of the Whales,” which will undoubtedly be accompanied by stunning images. He’ll be at Playhouse Square’s Mimi Ohio Theatre this week as part of the National Geographic Live series.
