The Cleveland Seed Bank skipped its annual Seed Swap event in 2021 for reasons you all know, and held the event late, in March, last year, after the Omicron surge held things back a bit. But this year it’s back to its usual January slot, giving gardeners and urban farmers plenty of time to plan ahead (Plantings of some crops, such as kale, spinach, collards and peas can begin as soon as mid-March!)
So what’s it about? First of all, while the event encourages seed saving and trading, most people don’t have seeds to bring and that’s OK. The Seed Bank’s partners provide plenty of packets so there are enough seeds for everyone.
When you arrive, you’ll find the auditorium of St. Patrick’s Church in Ohio City filled with tables and seeds arranged by type: greens; roots crops such as radishes, turnips and carrots; tomatoes, eggplants and peppers; cucurbits (squash, pumpkins, cucumber, zucchini); flowers; rhizomes and tubers; and starters for yogurt, sourdough and kombucha, among other things. This year there’ll be a space for house pants and cuttings as well. If you have something to leave, leave it. If not, take just whatever you think you will grow. There’s also a kids’ table with activities usually related to nature and growing. And while they have’t announced any yet, there are usually vendors & organizations related to growing and the environment.
To register go here. If you join the Seed Bank, you can come an hour early, giving yourself a more leisurely browse before things get packed. It’s free, but they do have a $5 suggested donation. No one will be turned away because they can’t pay though.
