Cleveland Orchestra Offers Rare Timpani Concerto as Part of its First 2023 Program

Thu 1/5 @ 7:30PM

Sat 1/7 @ 8PM

The Cleveland Orchestra opens 2023 with a couple of less familiar composers and the spotlight on one of it own members as a soloist.

New York-based American conductor Alan Gilbert, who served as an assistant conductor with the Cleveland Orchestra in the mid 90s, will be on the podium, as the orchestra gets things started with James Oliverio’s new Timpani Concerto, Legacy Ascendant, which features Cleveland Orchestra principal timpani Paul Yancich, a work commissioned for him by the Orchestra. It’s the third one Oliverio, a former classmate of Yancich’s at the Cleveland Institute of Music, has written for him.

They’ll then perform Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 90 before closing things out with early 20th century Danish composer Carl Nielsen’s Symphony No. 3 (“Sinfonia espansiva”). That piece includes wordless solos for soprano and baritone, which will be sung by Liv Redpath and Justin Austin.
