Cleveland Cello Society Showcases Its Scholarship Competition Winners

Sun 1/29 @ 2PM

The mission of the Cleveland Cello Society is to grow the audience for cello music, increasing appreciation for the instrument. Its 13-person board includes 10 cello players, ranging from amateurs to professional freelancers to three current and one emeritus cellists with the Cleveland Orchestra (including its principal cellist Mark Kosower, currently president of the board). Obviously, they have some skin in the game.

One of the ways it grows the pool of enthusiasts is to grow the pool of future performers through its annual scholarship competition. The winners have been named and now they will show off their skills in an afternoon showcase at The Music Settlement.

Both the gold and silver prizes were won by Cleveland Institute of Music students, respectively Benjamin Mekinulov and Martha Sprague. The Agnew Bach Prize was won by Oberlin Conservatory student Nathaniel Abreu, The senior division prize was won by Fiona Tsang of CIM; the junior division prize by Sonya Moomaw of Cincinnati; and the elementary division by Holden Gilbert of Cleveland.

Admission is $10 for non-CCS members, at the door only; it’s free for members.
