Unsilent Night Participatory “Sound Sculpture” Event Returns to Tremont

Wed 12/14 @ 6:45PM

Unsilent Night is a loosely networked international endeavor where each city creates its own event following the same template. The event has taken place in nearly 150 cities, including Cleveland, on five continents, attracting thousands of participants in some cities.

Cities around the world have been doing this event since 1992 when composer/sound artist Phil Kline (an Akron native) wrote four pieces of music to be played simultaneously in the streets of Greenwich Village in New York, where he’s based. Originally each participant got an Mp3 (!), CD (!!) or cassette (!!!) of one of four pieces, to be played on a boombox (!!!!!!!), while walking around a selected space to create a “mobile sound sculpture.”

Cleveland’s event, hosted by Andrew Ratcliff, doesn’t attract thousands but you can help grow the numbers. In these modern times, you’ll need a smartphone and Bluetooth speaker. Bring them to the staging location — the Gazebo in Tremont’s Lincoln Park — for the 45-minute walk, which starts at 7pm. Get there at 6:45 to get instructions and get organized. You can download the music at unsilentnight.com/participate or get it through the unsilent Night app.
