Last “Nutcracker” of the Season Is Set in 1930s Akron

Thu 12/22 & Fri 12/23 @ 7:30PM

Yes, there’s still time to cram one more Nutcracker into the schedule before Christmas Day brings down the curtain for another year.

The Dance Institute at the University of Akron pulls out all the stops for “The Akron Nutcracker: A Holiday in the Rubber City,” one of those localized versions everyone seems to be doing these days, set in the past as so many are. We’re told that the “sights, sounds, and magic of 1930s Akron will again come to life,” back when dad toiled in a rubber factory … Ok, maybe not that, but it will take the audience down Akron’s Main Street to visit Polsky’s department store and to Stan Hywet Hall to celebrate Christmas Eve with the Seiberling family, headed by rubber tycoon Frank Seiberling. Although it’s unlikely you would’ve been invited in the 30s, Stan Hywet Hall is open to the public NOW! (Its “Deck the Hall” celebration runs through December 30.)

The production, which takes place at the University of Akron’s E.J. Thomas Hall, will feature a full orchestra (The Akron Symphony) playing the familiar Tchaikovsky score live with dancers from Verb Ohio Contemporary Ballet.
