Stephan Haluska, who is a faculty member at The Music Settlement, is active in Cleveland’s experimental/improvisational music scene. But he stands out for the unique instrument he brings to the mix: harp — the large, stringed kind. He confounds conventional ideas of how the instrument should sound and the contexts in which it’s used, usually to suggest an “angelic” sound. He discovers a vast variety of sounds in it, exploring its harmonic, percussive and textural potential, through both traditional and extended techniques as well as special preparations, electronics processing and tools.
So expect the arrangements he performs of beloved holiday favorites in the Cleveland Museum of Art’s Ames Family Atrium to be a little different from what you might hear at the mall, likely even more engaging.
The museum is open until 9pm on Wednesdays and encourages families to stop in to enjoy the music, and grab some of the hot beverages and baked goods available in Provenance Café. And after 4pm admission to the special exhibition Impressionism to Modernism: The Keithley Collection is just $8. It closes January 8 so hurry on down to see works by Matisse, Picasso, Wyeth and more. Entrance to the museum is free as always as is the music in the Atrium.
