Sun 11/27 @ noon
It’s become an annual tradition for local blues guitarist/vocalist Travis “Moonchild” Haddix to celebrate his birthday with a show at the Music Box Supper Club. He’s doing it again, only this time, instead of an evening concert, he’ll be playing a family-friendly Sunday blues brunch to celebrate his 84th birthday. (Actual day: November 26). Seems like bluesmen just never quit!
Haddix is another of those local blues treasures who are probably better known outside the city to aficionados of the genre and those who attend blues festivals. He came north from Mississippi as a teenager, at the tail end of the Great Migration, settling in Cleveland in 1959 after a spell in Milwaukee. He joined the then-active blues/soul club scene, shaking things up with his soul- and pop-infused version of the blues.
By the late 80s, he was focusing on touring and blues festivals, many of them in Europe. He released a series of records on the Atlanta-based Ichiban label and later on his own Wann-Sann label, showcasing his blending of traditional blues with uptown soul influences.
Doors open at 11am for the noon performance. General admission is $10 in advance, $15 at the door, and reservations are required. Brunch is extra and optional, and of course, the bar is open.
