Australian classical guitarist Rupert Boyd, who came to the U.S. t o to study in 2004, and American cellist Laura Metcalf have been playing together as Boyd Meets Girl for almost a decade, shortly after they started dating (and ultimately got married). With not much repertoire for their instruments and wide musical tastes, they had to be creative. Their self-titled 2017 debut album features their arrangements of music by Gabriel Faure, Astor Piazzolla, Manuel de Falla — and Michael Jackson. Their second, Songs of Love and Despair, released this year continues to display their eclectic tastes, from Olivier Messiaen to Radiohead
They’ll be playing much of that music when they come to Cleveland under the auspices of the Cleveland Classical Guitar Society. The program includes music by Beyonce and Lennon/McCartney as well as J.S. Bach, Claude Debussy, Franz Schubert and Black American composer Florence Price, along contemporary classical composers Caroline Shaw and Jaime Zenamon (himself a classical guitarist), and arrangements of Appalachian folk songs by Robert Beaser.
The concert takes place at Cuyahoga Community College’s Metro camps Murphy Foundation Theater. For tickets go to cleguitar/boyd-meets-girl-concert/.
