Once upon a time, the Tremont neighborhood was home to numerous different ethnic groups, each of whom built their own church. Most are still standing, many with new congregations and others converted to new uses.
But the history of those buildings is such a core part of the community that the Tremont History Project hosts a church tour series. The guided tours inside each church offer background into its architectural history, its spiritual significance and how it tied culturally into the community that built it.
This week they’ll be touring one of the neighborhood’s most spectacular and dramatic buildings, St. Theodosius Orthodox Cathedral, which continues to function as an Eastern Orthodox Church — the oldest in Ohio, built in 1911-12 by Russian immigrants.
The tours are free and 60-90 minutes long. Registration online or by phone (216-272-5046) is highly encouraged.

The oldest Eastern Orthodox Church in Ohio is actually Holy Assumption in Marblehead, Ohio. It was built 6 years before St. Theodosius, 1906 versus 1912 for St Theodosius. St. Theodosius is the oldest Orthodox PARISH in Ohio, but not the oldest CHURCH. We received an official historical marker from the State of Ohio in 2023 commemorating this fact.
