Fri 10/7
Congresswoman Shontel Brown, representing Ohio’s 11th district, has been in office less than a year, but she’s already showing signs of being a worthy successor to the three accomplished, groundbreaking people who served the district for the last 50 years: Louis Stokes, Stephanie Tubbs Jones and Marcia Fudge.
On Friday October 7, Brown hosted a Legacy Celebration honoring those who blazed the trail for her. Held in the atrium of the Global Center for Health Innovation, guests were asked to wear black so the atrium was filled with elegantly dressed guest. The free event was open to the public, and of course attracted an array of local elected officials and activists who enjoyed munchies and drinks and a program that featured guest congresspeople Robin Kelly of Illinois, Brenda Lawrence of Michigan, Congressman Benny Thompson of Mississippi and South Carolina congressman and majority whip Jim Clyburn who played a key role not only in Shontel Brown’s election but also that of President Biden.
Their speeches were followed by presentations to the families of Stokes and Tubbs Jones (whose son Mervyn sported a T-shirt that said “My mom was everything … and then some”) and to Fudge herself, whose appointment to serve as Biden’s Secretary of Housing and Urban Development paved the way for Brown to assume her seat in a special election.
