Gordon Square’s Capitol Theatre Celebrates 100 Years

Sat 10/22 @ 7-11PM

Once upon a time, every neighborhood had its own theater, which kids would walk or bike to on weekends to catch the latest show. My neighborhood in Chicago had four within walking distance.

Most are gone now, replaced long ago by multiplexes, first at shopping malls and now giant stand-alone complexes. But a few have adapted and found ways to continue to offer movies locally. One of those is the 100-year-old Capitol Theatre in Detroit-Shoreway’s Gordon Square, the last remaining theater on Cleveland’s west side, which was restored and reopened in 2009. It’s now run as an arm of the nonprofit community development organization, Northwest Neighborhoods.

It had planned to celebrate in 2020 and then in 2021 but you know …. that COVID thing. The theater was closed for 17 months. So the party is on NOW.

There’ll be a party tent on West 65th street inviting visitors to enter the theater, whose main entrance is on West 65th, right off Detroit Avenue. Mayor Justin Bibb; former councilman Matt Zone, who was instrumental in the restoration; current councilperson Jenny Spencer, who’s host committee co-chair along with Carrie Carpenter; and many other advocates and supporters of the Gordon Square Arts district will be on hand.

It kicks off with a VIP reception at 6pm, followed by general admission at 7 for the program in the auditorium. From 8:30-11pm there’ll be indoor and outdoor revelry with live music, dancing, drinks and appetizers created by local chefs, with desserts and a late-night screening of Back to the Future at 9:30pm.

Tickets start at $25. Go here to get them.
