Euclid’s Slovenian Society Home Says Goodbye With an Evening of Dancing

Eddie Rodick

Fri 10/21 @ 6-10PM

Euclid’s Slovenian Society Home is in its final days after 103 years. In the first half of the 20th century it was a busy home-away-from-home for the east side’s large Slovenian community, which produced “Cleveland-style,” aka Slovenian, polka music. It hosted meetings, community events, theater, and dances with the likes of Cleveland Polka King Frankie Yankovic, who had two million-selling records in the late 1940s and a big national reputation. Those evenings must’ve been packed!

But the Slovenian community has dispersed and grandchildren and great-grandchildren are increasingly removed from the culture of that era, so fewer Slovenian community centers like Euclid’s are needed. Still, Clevelanders love their polka bands with their lively polkas and romantic waltzes, which is what Eddie Rodick and His Orchestra will provide on this farewell night. Dancing takes place from 6-10pm. There’ll be sandwiches and ethnic treats as well.

Members of the National Cleveland-Style Polka Hall of Fame will get free admission and you can join at the door to get a free ticket. Help keep the “happiest sound around” playing!

Enjoy dancing from 6-10pm. Sandwiches and nationality treats are provided by the Slovenian Home.

  1. Sorry to hear this. I went down there a LOT with my parents…my Dad, Bob Speck, was on the Board of Directors (or so he said), and my Mom, Josie, was a regular down there on Friday nights for polka dancing. And let’s not forget the great fish fries on Fridays!

  2. I am so sorry to see this wonderful place to close. My family would go every year in late Jan, early Feb. for the venison dinner, what a time we had. All twenty of us would go and it always a night to remember. My younger sister had her reception there which was a wonderful wedding, the ethnic food, strudel, nut roll, Slovenian sausage, potatoes, oh the salad was out of this world, the polka music, what wonderful memories. My husband and I did wedding photography for over 50yrs and Reher Hall as we knew it was a specialty back then. What wonderful memories, I can still here the polka music as if I was there right now, a tradition that will be missed. And also one note the Slovenian cooks, Jenny Zalar and her ladies and all the other cooks, what a life we had.
