Contemporary Youth Orchestra and Nightranger Play Memorial Benefit Concert

Wed 11/9 @ 7PM

One of the regular projects of the Cleveland-based Contemporary Youth Orchestra, founded in 1995 by Liza Grossman to give talented kids the chance to work and perform contemporary orchestral music and arrangements, has been to collaborate with well-known pop and rock acts such as Jefferson Starship, Styx, Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo, and Michael Stanley for orchestral concerts of the artists’ work. It’s a slightly different version of their work with contemporary composers in which the orchestra works with the composer to develop the performance.

The ensemble’s next concert is one of those collaborations, and before you go, “Why would they work with a group like ’80s hitmakers Nightranger?” know that there’s a special back story to this one.

It’s the second annual Danny Repipi Memorial Concert, held in memory of local funeral director Ripepi who was killed in a highway accident in I-480 in September 2020. Nightranger played the first one too, held last year at Jacobs Pavilion in the Flats. The band’s tour manager, Ed Ripepi, is Danny’s brother, so they were excited to get on board an annual series of concerts, each of which will benefit a different charitable cause. This year’s concert will benefit CYO, giving more young people the opportunity to deepen their engagement with music.

The concert takes place at Playhouse Square’s State Theatre. It will include a silent auction and raffle held throughout the evening. Go here for tickets.
