The Cleveland Arts Prize has been recognizing creative talent in northeast Ohio at all stages of their careers in a variety of disciplines — visual art, theater, dance, film, music, literature — for more than six decades, honoring more than 350 creators and well as arts supporters and organizations. It honors emerging artists, mid-career artists and lifetime achievement. And each year, it has an event to celebrate.
This year’s 62nd CAP Annual Awards Ceremony again takes place at the Cleveland Museum of Art’s Gartner Auditorium with actress Mariah Burk who has performing on many local stages, hosting. Performers include several past CAP winners jazz sax player Ernie Krivda (2009), jazz/R&B/spoken word ensemble Mourning [A] BLKstar (2021) and poet Ray McNiece (2021). For the second year Liza Grossman (201) will conduct The Kaboom Collective as the event’s orchestra.
And the winners are ….
Gladisa Guadalupe, founder & artistic director of the Cleveland Ballet, Lifetime Achievement Award; baroque oboe player and founder and artistic director of period chamber ensemble Les Delices, Debra Nagy, Mid-Career Artist Award; jazz trumpeter Dominick Farinacci, who has remained a key force in the education component of Tri-C Jazz Fest while building an international career, Mid-Career Artist Award; visual artist Amber Kempthorn, Emerging Artist Award; and furniture designer and founder of SOULcraft CLE, Emerging Artist Award.
Special awards include the Robert P. Bergman Prize to poet/visual artist Julie (“Little Virgie”) Patton who created an installation of the work of her mother, Virgie Ezelle Patton, for FRONT International Triennial 2018; and the Martha Joseph Prize to dancer/choreographer and teacher of classical Indian dance, Sujatha Srinivasan.
