Authors Debut New Book on the Cleveland Cultural Gardens

Sun 10/23 @ 1PM

The Cleveland Cultural Gardens that line MLK Boulevard in Rockefeller Park (with some extending upward to East Boulevard) are unique treasure that far too few Clevelanders have fully explored. Founded in 1916 with the Shakespeare (now British) garden, their number grew rapidly during the mid 20s century, honoring the mostly Eastern European cultures whose immigrants were rising in the community. They slowed in the ’70s and ’80s, and in the last 20 years or so have expanded rapidly to embrace cultures from Asia, Africa and South America who have settled in the area more recently.

That 100+ year history is a fascinating one with many stories to be told about the organizations that founded each garden and how they constructed and landscaped their gardens to reflect the aspects of their culture they were proudest of.

Now noted Cleveland historian John J. Gabowski and photographer Lauren R. Pacini have published a book titled Cleveland’s Cultural Garden — A Landscape of Diversity — that shares some of those stories. Learn more about the book, meet the authors and buy a copy for them to sign at an event at the Polish American Cultural Center in Slavic Village. Admission is free. You can also take a self-guided tour of the museum and outdoor Heritage Garden, or come early (11:30am-1:30pm) and for $16 enjoy a luncheon.
