Lakewood’s St. James Church offers a concert series called The Sound of Saint James created by its musical director, Adam Chlebek, a recent Oberlin Conservatory graduate.
He’s drawn on his contacts for the season kickoff: a performance by the Cleveland Consort of Voices. The octet was recently formed under Oberlin Professor Steven Plank, director of Oberlin’s Collegium Musicum. His specialty is the relationship of liturgical spirituality and musical style, making the ensemble a perfect fit for a church performance. The eight consort members have top-flight credentials: they were drawn from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, the Cleveland Institute of Music, Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music, the Cleveland Opera, Cleveland Chamber Chorus and the St. Paul’s Episcopal Choir in Cleveland Heights.
They’ll perform a cappella, singing music by William Byrd, Johannes Brahms, Jean Mouton, Giovanni da Palestrina, Paul Mealor, Heinrich Schutz and Johann Sebastian Bach that highlights Renaissance polyphony and takes advantage of Saint James’ acoustics.
Admission is free; there’s a suggested donation of $15. Light refreshments will be available following the concert.
