Forum Looks at the Impact of Gerrymandering on Ohio Elections

Thu 9/22 @ 7:15PM

The last year has been a disaster for democracy in Ohio as we’ve seen the Republicans on the redistricting commission blatantly sneer at the state constitution’s requirement for fair district maps and voters’ expressed demand for them.

Some people have said, well, that still doesn’t impact statewide races — but that’s false. When congressional and legislative races are virtually never competitive, turnout drops as voters become discouraged, and the more turnout drops, the less election results, and state governance, will reflect the will of the voters.

Join a panel of local experts on Zoom to talk about Ohio’s broken redistricting process and the impact it will have on northeast Ohio, especially majority-minority communities, and how proposed state voter laws would affect redistricting, voter registration, and voter access.

Nick Castele of ideastream wll moderate the discussion, which features Cleveland Votes co-founder/executive director Erika Anthony, state representative Juanita Brent, Cleveland NAACP executive director Crystal Bryant and Aaron Ockerman, a consultant with the Ohio Association of Election Officials.
